Price/Cost to Move a Socket or Switch

Socket or switch costThis task is more complicated, as mentioned this will involve tapping into existing cables, installing a junction box, cutting into the wall and some plastering work over the area where the old switch/socket was.

Don’t forget that a cable must be inserted into the wall vertically so your electrician can just run a length horizontally; the example quotes is reflect this extra work. We assume the electrician will relocate the switch/socket at least 2 metres away from the original location:

Price/Cost to For an Additional Socket

This work involves an extra power socket to a circuit, called a “spur”. The quote again includes some plaster repair work but not redecorating. This work is more straightforward than moving a socket/switch. You should note that there are limitations on the number of spurs that the electrician can add to a circuit:

More Information

The following is information provided to us by several of the electricians we contacted:

Due to current regulations, you must have a junction box installed if you relocate a light switch, and it must be accessible. The days of joining two cables and then plastering over it – well, those days are long gone. While some traders still cut corners, a surveyor could detect shoddy during a survey. It could also invalidate your home insurance.

The installer could fix a junction box at floor level attached to the skirting boards, or he could secure it under the floor boards. Either way, it must be accessible, and that may cost more money. The alternative is to strip the cable out all the way to the previous JB or socket/switch; that will cost even more.

When your electrician installs the new socket or switch, he/she will arrange for a plasterer to come in and repair the walls. Once complete, the electrician will come back and complete the work.

Variations in Cost/Price

Having a double socket or a dimmer switch will add a small amount to the total cost but will be negligible. Swapping a standard white plastic socket/switch for chrome etc. will add considerably more. Finding a circuit for a light switch can sometimes be difficult as it’s often impossible to locate the wiring and you have to start at the centre of the room where the light is hanging, this can all affect the cost/price.

As previously stated, junction boxes must be installed if you want to move a socket or switch and then plaster over the old one. Also, an RCD (a type of circuit breaker) must be installed for any new switch or socket points. You may already have an RCD, but this will depend on how old your fuse board/box is.

You may be able to save some money by having external trunking instead of burying the cables in the wall. This trunking won’t be visually appealing but may be acceptable in certain rooms of the house (garage, walk-in storage areas, etc.).
