How much does it cost to replace bathroom items such as baths, taps, sinks and toilets? What is a fair price to pay for this work and do you also need to have new wall tiles and flooring as well?

bath costs

The problem with the bathroom is the wall and floor tiling, if you replace certain fixtures then you may be left with a gap in the tiling. Sure, you can find new tiles in almost any DIY store but finding ones that match your existing ones is pretty much impossible. A complete re-tile of the bathroom is often required when changing the bath and sinks/toilets etc.

It is worth noting that wall/floor tiling rarely goes behind/under the bath – usually the bath is installed first and then the wall tiles are hung and sealed to the top edge of the bath with mastic. Remove the bath and you will see plaster behind it, install a smaller bath you will still see the plaster… Yuck!

To keep things simple, our prices/costs on this page exclude any tiling work. We have assumed a straight swap new-for-old.

Can Our Prices be Relied Upon?

The figures we publish on our site are based on real quotes given to us by trades people and companies operating in the UK.

We invite traders into our homes so we can get reliable costings for various home repair, replacement and maintenance projects.

There are of course limitations and caveats – no project is ever the same and every house is different.

The prices given to us can vary considerably and as we have found during the last two years, the time of year can also affect the cost.

You can see exactly how we gather our prices on this page.

Quotation Check has appeared in several newspaper columns and on many finance websites. The insurer Direct Line even suggested customers use our website for quote comparison:

Unexpected Variations in Prices/Costs

One of the things we noticed when researching prices for this type of work was the huge variations from one plumber to the next. Some one-man traders were happy to quote £75 labour fees if the customer supplied the materials, larger companies obviously with more overheads were charging several hundred pounds plus the cost of the materials.

We also noticed that some plumbers in London were charging considerably more than those in the North of England and Scotland. This is one of the biggest price differences we have seen across all of the trades we have covered on our site. The bigger the company and the further south they were located the more costly they were.

The team here at QuotationCheck did check several other websites that claim to show realistic price/cost examples to replace bathroom taps, baths and basins etc but several of these sites were spammed with comments from plumbers trying to promote their own services, we couldn’t replicate these low prices within our data.

One other point to remember is that some businesses have to charge VAT (currently 20%) while those trading below the VAT threshold aren’t required to. This obviously has a huge impact on the final cost. Traders can stay below the VAT threshold by only charging labour and getting the customer to buy the materials.

Cost to Replace a Bath

We are assuming you want to swap your bath for an acrylic one of roughly the same size, our price/cost quote assumes a standard straight, mid-range product which you can find at several outlets such as Victoria Plumb and B&Q. We have included the bath, labour costs, basic taps and waste disposal but have excluded any tiling work:

London Area£450.00£550.00
South, SW and Midlands£375.00£475.00
Outer Region and North£325.00£400.00

If you want a bath that is more sturdy then you could upgrade to steel or an acrylic on that is thicker (the thicker the bath the less movement/creaking) That will obviously cost more so add it to our prices/costs displayed here.

Wash Basin

This is somewhat easier as you will find that the tiling goes right behind the basin (unlike a bathtub) so installing a new basin won’t leave a crappy eyesore piece of plaster. Well it shouldn’t do! Don’t take our word for it, we can only advise on typical bathrooms, yours may well be different. So have a look yourself or ask a plumber to inspect it and give you a recommendation.

Here is a cost/price example to remove and dispose of the original wash basin and replace it with a standard replacement costing in the region of £125.00 including new taps of course:

London Area£350.00£450.00
South, SW and Midlands£250.00£350.00
Outer Region and North£225.00£350.00

If you want tiling, flooring or carpet work done or perhaps some replacement waste pipe back to the main waste/soil pipe then it will cost more, the price above is just for the bare essentials.

Cost to Replace a Toilet

Looking for a price/cost to replace just a toilet in a bathroom?

The good news is that any existing tiling should go behind the toilet, if you choose your new crapper carefully then it may be possible to install it without too much work to the tiling. This really does depend on the toilet you choose and the competence of your plumber, but it is possible to replace a toilet without stripping off the wall tiles. Some “boxing in” may be required and we assumed that this will be the case when compiling our toilet costs:

Replace Taps in Bathroom

Below you can see the cost a typical plumber would charge to remove and replace bath and basin taps, he will dispose of the old taps and the new ones cost around £90 for a matching bath/basin set, this is included in our costs.

If you want fancy taps that glow in the dark or have bells and whistles then that will cost more!

This type of job is very simple and easy for any competent plumber but as with most tradespeople there is a “minimum charge” that essentially covers their time.

You may get lucky and find a plumber who is prepared to complete this work for less, but most of our plumbers told us they had to charge a minimum which is reflected in the quotes below:

South, SW and Midlands£175.00£275.00
