What Work is Included in the Price?

The following list is what we wanted doing to our 40 sq metre driveway to rejuvenate and protect it:

  • Pressure wash the block paving and then apply a fungicide chemical or weed killer to prevent moss/algae/weed growth.
  • Allow to fully dry (2-3days)
  • Fill gaps in block pavers by brushing in kiln dried sand.
  • Apply a driveway sealant similar to Resiblock

Overview of Driveway Sealing/Jetting

We found that driveway cleaning and sanding with kiln dried sand typically cost between £2-£3 per sq metre, while cleaning, sanding and sealing cost between £6.50 and £9.50 per sq metre based on 40 sq metres.

Differences are based on location, type of sealant used and the size of the company. Small “one man” type tradespeople obviously have less overheads so they charge less.

The type of sealant used does have a noticeable effect on the quote, we found the tradespeople who recommended “Resiblock” were the most expensive of the figures we received.

Our quotes above do not include VAT but most of the traders we contacted were operating below the VAT threshold.

Drive/Patio Cleaning Only Price

We asked our chosen contractors to give us a separate quote for power washing (jetting) the driveway without applying any sealants.

Most of our quotes included the application of a moss/algae killing chemical (example here) after the driveway had been cleaned.

The average price was £2.75 per sq metre for cleaning and fungicide treatment. London areas were slightly more expensive but only marginally.

Several of our quotes stated that there was a minimum charge, most were between £75-£100.

How Long Will The Work Take?

It will take a few hours to clean the driveway with a power washer, about half an hour to treat it with a chemical fungicide. The driveway will then need to be left to dry for a few days (block pavers do tend to soak up water) before the kiln dried sand can be applied. This is an important part of the procedure as the sand fills the gaps between the bricks and prevents the blocks from shifting. This will take about an hour which includes sweeping off the excess sand and finally using a leaf blower to ensure the surface is completely sand and dust free. The application of the sealant will take no more than a couple of hours for a 40 sq metre driveway.

Pro Tip

The team here at Quotation Check does a lot more than just gathering quotes, we also carry out extensive research and have plenty of experience ourselves.

The best advice we can give you is this:

Don’t bother having your driveway sealed during the months of November – February. There is so much moisture at ground level during the winter, especially through the night and early morning that the block paving won’t have the chance to fully dry out. Applying a product like Resiblock when the blocks are damp is just asking for trouble, it will reduce the longevity of the product.

Don’t forget that even if the surface of the block appears dry it could still be holding moisture deep inside the material.

Tradespeople may not want you to know this, after all they would be losing work but this type of sealing shouldn’t be carried out during the damp and cold winter months.
