The process is so effective that some driveways don’t just look clean, they look completely rejuvenated and they stay that way for years.

But how much does this work cost?

What is a fair and reasonable price to pay a professional firm to complete this type of work?

How Much Work Is Involved With Driveway Cleaning? What Do You Get For Your Money?

Below is a works schedule for the cleaning, repair and sealing of a typical block paved driveway.

We based this list on the information we gathered from our chosen twenty four driveway cleaners.

  • Remove any weeds and brush off any loose debris from the driveway surface.
  • Power wash the blocks and apply a grease dissolving chemical to any oil spots.
  • Treat the entire driveway surface with a fungicide chemical and weed killer to stop weeds, algae and moss from growing on or between the blocks.
  • Allow the surface to fully dry, which can take around a day in the summer or up to three days in the winter.
  • Any gaps between the paving blocks to be filled with kiln dried sand.
  • Next, a protective sealant (such as Resiblock) is applied, usually by a roller.

The Results of Our Research

We discovered through our research, that driveway washing and infill sanding with kiln dried sand cost between £2-£3 per sq metre of driveway.

Cleaning, sanding and sealing with a protective coat on the surface cost between £6.50 and £9.50 per sq metre.

The prices above are based on a driveway size of 40 sq metres.

In general, we found that firms in the south of the UK charged more than those in other parts of the country. This is something we’ve noticed in most of the price guides on our site.

The quality of the sealant applied to the surface of the driveway also affects the price. We found the tradespeople who recommended “Resiblock” were the most expensive.

The prices on this page don’t include VAT as most of the traders we contacted were operating below the VAT threshold. We thought it would be best to exclude this tax from our results.

What About “Driveway Only” Cleaning Prices?

Not every driveway needs a new protective layer applied to the surface.

In fact, some consumers prefer to keep the natural look of their driveway, they just want it cleaned.

We asked our twenty four chosen cleaners to provide us with a separate figure for power washing (jetting) the driveway without any sealants or coatings.

Most of our figures we received back included a cost to apply a moss/algae killing chemical (example here) after the driveway had been cleaned.

We were told that was essential as without it, moss/weeds etc would start to grow back quite quickly.

The average figure came in at £2.75 per sq metre. The London area was somewhat more expensive, but only by a small amount.

Two of the firms we contacted stated that there was a minimum charge, these were £80 and £100.

How Long Does it Take to Complete A Project Like This?

From the information we received from our driveway cleaners, we think it will take a few hours to clean the driveway with a power washer and then about half an hour or so to treat the surface with a weed-killing chemical.

Because driveway blocks and other materials soak up and hold water, the driveway should then be left to dry for a day or so before the kiln dried sand can be applied.

How long it takes to dry will depend on the time of year and how much direct sunlight the surface receives.

The kiln dried sand is used to fill the gaps between the blocks which can widen over time as they shift under the weight of vehicles parked on the driveway. The sand improves the appearance of the driveway and stops dirt from collecting in the gaps, which can lead to weed growth.

Pro Tip

The folks here at Quotation Check do much more than just sourcing prices we also carry out detailed research, ask tons of questions and we’ve plenty of experience in the construction and home improvement sectors ourselves.

We have a great tip for you:

Don’t seal your driveway during the months of November through February.

This is because there’s much more moisture at ground level during the winter, especially during the night and early morning that the block paving won’t have the chance to fully dry out.

If you apply a product like Resiblock when the surface is damp, you’re just asking for trouble. We think this will reduce the life expectancy of the sealant.

Also; don’t forget that even if the surface of the block may appear dry, it could still hold moisture deep inside the material.

Some tradespeople may not be so forthcoming with this information, most try to work all year round.
