What is the Going Rate for Driveway Sealing in the UK?

The cost of an entirely new driveway can be prohibitively expensive, especially when you account for the cost of the foundation, waste disposal and the rainwater drainage regulations that apply to newly constructed driveways.

For this reason, more and more people are turning to driveway sealing and recolouring, so much so that there are now hundreds of good quality products on the market.

Expect a rejuvenated driveway at a fraction of the cost of a new drive. You’ll also protect the driveway from oil and fuel spills and some sealants can be mixed with anti-slip additives to provide better grip, perfect for steep drives that become slippery when wet.

It wasn’t difficult to get 42 prices for driveway sealing, we emailed photos and details about the driveway to the firms and they replied with written quotes.

A few of the firms came to inspect the driveway, but due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, most were happy to provide quotes online.

If you’re looking for a guide to how much driveway sealing costs, use our figures as a better-than-ballpark price but note the following:

  • All prices displayed below include VAT.
  • Includes power washing the driveway.
  • Includes treating the surface with mould and weed killer.
  • Includes minor repairs.
  • The sealant will depend on the type of surface – tarmac, concrete or blocks.
  • Any waste material is taken away and disposed of.

Compare These Three Quotes

We asked for prices to seal three different driveway types so below you’ll find results for tarmac, block driveways and concrete.

You can use these as a guide to driveway sealing in the UK for 2020/21.

Driveway Sealing Price 1 – Concrete Drive at 60 Square Metres

The prices shown below are an average of the prices given to us by 42 driveway sealing firms.

The driveway is 60 square metres, so will hold two, possibly three cars and is made from pattern imprinted concrete.

These types of driveways need to be recoloured or coated every 5-7 years so do consider this if you’re thinking about having a concrete driveway installed.

The figures below include cleaning the driveway, weed and moss killer treatment and two coats of coloured sealant to rejuvenate the surface.

London Area£600£750
South, SW and Midlands£600£700
Outer Region and North£475£550

Concrete Sealing Cost 2 – Tarmac Resealing/Colouring to 60 Square Metres

Tarmac driveways fade over time from UV rays and can look dull and tired after just a few years.

Fortunately, there are plenty of tarmac restorer products on the market that bring the colour back to where it should be and also protect the surface from further UV damage.

In addition, there are reasonably priced repair compounds that can be used to fill in cracks.

Here’s our price guide for tarmac recolouring, again to a 60 square metre driveway.

South, SW and Midlands£550£650

Driveway Sealing Price 3 – Block Paving Sealer to 60 Square Metres

Driveway block paving can be very absorbent so if they’ve never been sealed before, you’ll need lots more sealant than previously sealed blocks.

Most of the companies we sourced prices from recommended either Resiblock or Smartseal block paving sealers. We’ve used both before and they are at the upper end of the price range but also of very good quality.

If the prices below seem high, do bear in mind that there are many cheaper, although probably inferior, products on the market. Also, you’ll need less sealant if the drive has been previously sealed.

What is The Best Time of Year to Seal a Driveway?

Mid-spring to mid-autumn is the best time of year to seal a driveway. You should avoid sealing or coating driveways in winter as it’s damp for long periods of time. The surface needs to be dry for the product to adhere correctly.

How Long Does it Take to Seal a Driveway?

The work is usually completed in two stages, each stage may take less than one day depending on the size of the driveway.

Stage one involves cleaning (power washing) the surface, removing any weeds, making good repairs and applying a fungicide or weed killer to kill off algae and weed roots. Fine kiln-dried sand can also be applied to fill in any gaps between driveway blocks.

Stage two can only be started when the drive is completely dry. In summer this could be the next day while in cooler months, the drive may need a few days to fully dry. Stage two involves two application of sealer with a few hours drying time between each coat.

This type of work can be completed by just one worker but to speed up the project, two could be working on the driveway.

What Are The Key Benefits of Driveway Sealing Vs a New Driveway?

There are many:

  1. Quicker than installing a new driveway.
  2. Cheaper.
  3. Less disruptive.
  4. No need to worry about driveway drainage regulations (they only affect new driveways).
  5. Better for the environment as there’s far less wastage.
How Long Until I Can Use The Driveway?

The sealants and colourants usually dry within a few hours but vehicles should be kept off the drive for 48 hours.
