A Look at Garden Maintenance Charges Prices and Costs

I don’t know about you but I just never seem to find the time to carry out garden maintenance tasks such as cutting, pruning, weeding and general tidying up.

I currently use the services of a local gardener who charges very reasonable fees, but how much is too much and what is the going rate?

Welcome to Quotation Check – On our site, we regularly research prices and quotes for a wide range of gardening and home improvement projects.

We then post an average price on our site so visitors can get a rough idea of how much these jobs should cost. The page you’re reading forms part of our series into common landscape projects and general gardening maintenance.

This is just one of our cost guides, you can see our complete price list here on this page.

Our Price Guide

We know that outdated price guides are irrelevant and unhelpful, that’s why we update our price guides every few years. This page was last updated on the .

How much does it cost to have a gardener do regular maintenance work in the garden?

Garden maintenanceBy regular maintenance we’re referring to the following:

  • Cutting and feeding the grass
  • Hedge trimming
  • Plant pruning
  • Leaf blowing and collecting
  • Weeding
  • Watering
  • Patio, path and driveway cleaning

While larger jobs are often priced via a fixed written quote, most regular maintenance work is charged by the hour.

What’s Included/Excluded in the Maintenance Quotes

When we contacted the gardeners to quote for maintenance work, we asked lots of questions about what is included/excluded from their quotes.

While the response from every company was different, here are the notable inclusions/exclusions:

Typical gardening costs and pricesIncluded:

  • 2 x employees* per working on a per hour basis
  • All tools and equipment that is usually carried in the landscape gardeners van (hedge trimming, grass cutting, leaf blowing and general tools etc)
  • VAT

Exclusions:

  • Most of the gardeners we contacted would only quote for a minimum of two hours work
  • Heavy machinery/equipment was excluded
  • Any charges for waste disposal
  • Materials such as patio slabs/fence panels

(*excludes quotes we received from “one-man type businesses”)

Variations in Price – An Explanation

We noticed a big difference in the costs charged by self-employed gardeners and those who were running a business that employed other people.

Obviously, there are additional costs that are involved with employing people, especially when expensive vans and equipment are involved.

Small “one man” type businesses can charge just enough to cover their wages and limited costs such as fuel.

We also saw a big difference in the prices from London based gardeners to those further up north or in the south-west. This is normal and something we have seen in almost all of the quotes we gathered from across all of the trades. Living in London is just more expensive than living up north, so the trades have to charge more, not just to cover business expenses but also to maintain the lifestyle in the pricey capital.

Got a Large Project – It’s Best to Get a Fixed Quote

We also enquired about getting a price for larger jobs, nearly all of the landscape gardeners we contacted preferred to give us a fixed quote rather than “per hour” cost.

I work in London, I am pretty qualified (horticulture + garden design + continuous self learning) and charge £20/h. The quote above refers to 2 people so in my case it would be £40/h! I should charge a bit more!

I charge 25ph in London, and I’m busy every day. If people are silly enough to work for peanuts then they must be monkeys. Time I’ve paid costs and tax 25ph is not a lot.
