5 Killer Tips For a Successful Shed Installation

  1. The most important part of any shed installation is the foundation or base which must be strong and level. An uneven base means the shed will buckle and windows may break or the doors will wedge tight against the frame. This may not be apparent at first but can happen after the timber shed has “settled”.
  2. We suggest you make sure your shed isn’t built too close to any fence or walls, you should aim to leave enough space to paint/treat the timber otherwise it will rot and fail sooner.
  3. If you need power supplied to the shed, consider how this can be achieved given its location.
  4. If you intend to spend a lot of time in the shed, consider how much natural light will enter the windows given it’s chosen location.
  5. If you’ll be placing the shed onto timber decking, make sure a weed proof membrane is laid to stop weeds penetrating through the gaps in the decking.

Our Price Guide

We first sent out price requests to several traders and businesses in the UK.

Most were happy to quote via email after we provided photos and information about our garden.

We then took an average of the prices and formulated our price guide which is displayed below.

We made a few assumptions when sourcing and publishing these figures:

  • VAT is excluded, not every tradesman we contacted was operating above the VAT threshold
  • There were no major access issues to the rear garden, this is an important consideration
  • We didn’t need power supplied to the shed
  • Only minimal clearing of the garden/shrubs/topsoil was required

See more information on how we gathered figures for this page.

Cost Example 1 – 6ft x 4ft Budget Shed on a Simple Slab Base

For this price, we assume that the shed’s base will be made from cheap slabs bedded onto a few inches on cement.

The scraped topsoil will be disposed of elsewhere in the garden (i.e no waste disposal fees).

A landscape gardener will prepare the base on the first day and return the next day to build the shed, which will take less than half a day. So the total man hours are no more than 1.5days.

See our price chart below to see what you can expect to be charged for this type of work, the price varies and depends on where you live and whether you choose a small one-man landscape gardener or a larger firm:

Cost Example 2 – Larger 12ft x 8ft Shed on Concrete Base

For this example, we wanted a shed constructed on a solid concrete base that will be prepared by a landscape gardener in advance.

The total amount of time to complete the installation is around 1.5 to 2 days. That’s about 1 day for clearing the ground, laying the concrete and allowing it to dry sufficiently.

The second day is spent erecting the shed, tidying up and disposing of any waste.

A concrete base will be much more sturdy than laying slabs but will incur some extra material and labour costs.

Don’t forget that this is a large shed so it will take some time and to clear the ground and requires at least a tonne of sand/cement/ballast to form the base.
