Garden decking is a practical and some say a more attractive alternative to patio slabs, concrete or shingle but how much does it cost and what work is involved with laying decking?

Explore our garden decking prices which were updated in 2020, get a handle on the pros and cons and use our recommended service to get a customised quotation online.

The team here at Quotation Check has been researching prices for home improvement and gardening projects for over six years so we know a thing or two about projects like this.

We Asked 28 Landscape Gardeners to Reveal Their Prices For Decking

See how much the going rate is for garden decking below

We contacted twenty-eight landscaping businesses in the UK and asked them to provide us with prices for various amounts and types of garden decking.

Some were able to provide a price via email after we answered a few questions (helpful with Covid-19) but most needed to first visit the property to inspect the garden.

The average of the prices is displayed below.

When gathering and displaying prices for garden decking, do note the following:

  • All prices include VAT where applicable.
  • The decking prices include the decking, support posts, frame, edging fascias, fixings, cement and a weed barrier.
  • The cost of waste disposal is included.
  • Finishing with protective oil is included.
  • We did not request prices for steps or handrails, unless stated.

Decking Price Example 1 – A 6.5metre by 2.5metre Rectangular Deck

We asked our 28 contractors to provide us with a price to supply and install garden decking to an area approx 16 square metres.

The shape is rectangular and measures 6.5m by 2.5m, the ground is even and the area is currently laid to grass.

We asked requested a price for budget range decking at the lower end of the price scale, that’s for 28mm standard grooved deck boards, the type you often see at DIY stores.

London Area£1900£2100

Decking Cost Example 2 – A 6.5metre by 2.5metre Area With Quality Hardwood Boards

When it comes to quality hardwood decking boards, the prices really can skyrocket so for our second decking price; we asked for good quality solid hardwood decking boards.

The area is the same as for our first quote; 6.5m x 2.5m elevated just off the ground, no handrails or steps and the ground is level.

Location:From:To:
London Area£2500£2700
South, SW and Midlands£2250£2500
Outer Region and North£2000£2200

Decking Example 3 – A More Complicated Installation

For this decking quote, we asked our chosen installers to price a more complicated project.

The area is again 6.5m x 2.5m but includes the following:

  • A curved shaped at the front edge.
  • Steps to the garden.
  • Elevated at one end due to the garden sloping away.
  • A handrail at one end.

The first price table is for standard 28mm grooved decking at the budget end of the price range.

The prices below also include the standard stuff too such as delivery fees, waste disposal, weed suppression membrane, oil finish etc.

Location:From:To:
London Area£2600£2800
South, SW and Midlands£2400£2600
Outer Region and North£2300£2500

Decking Example 4 – As Above But With Quality Hardwood Decking Boards

The prices shown below are for the same project as described in project 3 but are for premium, quality hardwood decking boards.

Notes

We asked for four different quotes to give you an idea of how much different projects will cost.

We found that the price of budget garden decking, that’s decking you’d typically find in B&Q and Wickes etc., to be fairly consistent among our chosen installers.

However, the price of the more expensive premium decking varied wildly, as did the prices for the more complicated installation.

We think our garden decking price guide is insightful and should provide you with more than a ballpark figure, although for an accurate price, you’ll need to arrange a customised quotation.

Garden Decking Q&A

When Were These Prices Sourced?

We sourced these prices in 2020 and updated this page to replace the previous research we did in 2016.

Which Companies Supplied You With Decking Prices?

We sourced prices from a wide variety of firms, including companies and one-person traders. We sourced prices fro various locations around the UK.

How Long Does Decking Last?

Decking can last for decades if installed correctly, but it does require occasional treatments with oil or a preservative stain.

How Can I Stop Mould Growing on Decking?

Wash the boards once per year with a fungicide such as benzalkonium chloride. We recommend this product.

How Do I Stop Decking From Being So Slippery?

A good installer will ensure there’s a slight slope to the installation so rainwater doesn’t pool in any grooves. The boards should ideally be laid perpendicular to the direction of foot traffic so there’s more grip. A yearly wash with a fungicide or a light power clean will remove any algae or mould that could cause a slip.

What Are The Pros and Cons of Decking?

Pros:

  • Arguably is more attractive than patio slabs.
  • Easier to install.
  • A more natural look that blends in well with a garden.
  • Great for elevated areas as can be raised on posts.

Cons:

  • Higher maintenance as it needs regular cleaning and protective stains, especially if experiencing lots of foot traffic.
  • Not as strong as slabs or concrete and more likely to suffer scratches and minor damage from day-to-day use.
  • Can be slippery when wet, especially if using a ladder on it for example.
  • Not very eco-friendly.
How Long Does it Take to Install Decking?

A simple deck 6.5m long by 2.5m wide can be installed in around a day while a more complicated project with handrails, steps, elevated sections and curved edges will take longer, between 2 and 3 days depending on how many tradespeople are working on the project.

Are There Any Trade Associations Where I Can Find Reputable Installers?

The Timber Decking and Cladding Association has a listed of members who may be able to provide you with a quote for the project. You can also use our network of tradespeople and of course, there’s also Checkatrade, Which?, Trustmark and other associations.

What Type of Company Installs Garden Decking?

There are specialist installers that fit decking and only decking, some cladding firms also install decking and many landscape gardeners also work with decking products on a regular basis.
