Gutter Guard Price Guide

Roof gutters often become clogged with twigs, leaves and other pieces of organic material including moss, lichen and algae.

A blocked gutter is less likely to cope with heavy or prolonged rainfall and may leak or overflow, which can cause considerable damage to the property.

While many homeowners choose to hire gutter cleaners to periodically clear out their gutters, another option is to install a gutter filter or leaf guard.

But how much does a gutter guard cost to install and are they any good?

Our Price Guide

In 2016 and again in early 2018, we got in touch with dozens of roofing and guttering firms in the UK.

We asked each of them to provide with a written quote for the installation of a gutter leaf guard to protect our roof guttering.

Several of the firms recommended a mesh type filter but most suggested a brush type product called the “Hedgehog”.

Below is a photo of the Hedgehog laying inside a gutter:

We’ve averaged the figures provided to us and displayed them in the tables below.

As the firms we contacted we based in different locations around the UK, we’ve also displayed the data based on location.

What Work is Included in the Prices?

The prices shown above include clearing out and unblocking the rainwater gutters and downpipes – that’s everything above ground.

Next, the gutters are tested with water and any gutter leaks repaired.

Then the gutter guard is installed and any waste material removed from the property.

Our property is semi-detached and has around 15 linear metres of guttering.

How Much Does it Cost to Buy These Products?

Amazon is by far the cheapest place to buy gutter guards.

The Hedgehog has over 300 positive reviews on Amazon and currently holds a 5-star rating.

See current prices for the gutter Hedgehog on sale at Amazon here.

How Long Does it Take to Install a Gutter Guard

We asked our chosen businesses how long they thought the work would take.

For a typical semi-detached house, we were told that the gutters can be cleaned and fitted with a gutter Hedgehog in a few hours.

The mesh, while cheaper to buy, requires a little more time to fit inside the guttering.

How Effective Are These Gutter Products?

Based on own experience, we feel these products work well at protecting gutters from large pieces of debris such as branches, twigs and leaves but are less effective with smaller particles such as moss, seeds, and pine needles.

FAQs

(Q) Can this work be done DIY?

(A) Many homeowners choose to install gutter guards themselves but working at heigh does carry a risk so we feel this work should only be done by a professional.

With over 10yrs experience in the gutter cleaning industry we have seen how good (or bad) different types of gutter guard is and how well it works in different situations.

To be blunt, gutter guard is a total waste of time and money. Firstly, It may be relatively cheap to buy, but it can be a nightmare to install, and if you get someone else to install it for you, it will work out expensive.

Secondly, no amount of gutter protection we have seen on the market can stop all the debris that ends up in the gutter, for example, most roofs in the uk will weather with the silt (very fine grade grains, like sand) continually washing into the gutter, and you would be extremely surprised how quickly this builds up… All kinds of plants, grass and other vega station grow in silt extremely well. Gutter protection rendered useless.

Finally, when you realise that the gutter protection isn’t working quite as well as you thought, you now have to get back up the ladder, take it all down, clean the gutters, then put it all back. Dangerous and time consuming.

It is so much quicker safer and easier to just get the gutters cleaned out once per year, and you can hire in a company that can clean the gutters with a vac. It doesn’t cost the earth and they also check the gutters at the same time so you don’t ever get any surprises. Check out http://fixedpriceguttercleaning.co.uk

I never knew there were so many different options when it comes to gutter protection. That is actually a really cool and fair way that you price your gutter protection. I think that the gutter hedgehog would me the one that I would need at my house in Tonga. As for here in the states I could go with something more general.
