Gutter Guard Price Guide

Do your gutters become blocked with leaves, moss and dirt on a regular basis? A gutter filter or guard can help, but how much do they cost to install? Explore our researched price guide located further down this page and discover how much roofing and guttering companies in the United Kingdom are charging.

About Quotation Check

Quotation Check was launched in 2014 and quickly became one of the UK’s leading home improvement price comparison websites.

The team here has researched over 100 prices (see them all listed here), from the cost of a new roof to a house rewire. We send out quote requests to tradespeople and businesses in the UK and then publish an average figure, so you can discover what others are being charged for this type of work.

Of course, there are some caveats to our website; no two houses are the same and different businesses will have differing overheads and profit margins. We have, however, been referenced in several newspapers and online publications and are visited by thousands of people every week. Feedback has generally been positive and we get many messages of thanks from our visitors.

Our Price Guide

Gutter hedgehog filter costs

We got in touch with 23 roofing companies and guttering installers and asked them to provide a quote to install gutter guards for us.

The property in question was a typical 3-bed semi-detached house with 7 metres of roofline to the rear and 7 metres to the front of the property.

We asked to be quoted for two different products:

The Gutter Hedgehog (see product here) – this product sits inside the guttering and is very easy to install. It can be purchased from Amazon as well as several roofing suppliers in the United Kingdom.

Gutter Mesh (see product here)- this mesh is often found in garden centres and DIY stores. It can be quite flimsy but does keep out leaves and other large debris.

We have taken an average of the prices we gathered and displayed them below. Don’t forget; as with all the figures here at Quotation Check, we have excluded the VAT. This is because some of the smaller traders are below the VAT threshold and do not need to charge it.

What is Included in our Cost Examples?

The first task is to have the guttering unblocked and the rainwater downpipes and underground drains checked. There is no point in installing a gutter guard to a blocked rainwater system.

After clearing them out, the gutters are checked for leaks and any leaky parts are replaced.

The gutter guard is then fitted. The mesh comes with clips to hold it in place. The Gutter Hedgehog is inserted into the gutter and coated garden wire is used to prevent the wind from blowing it out of the gutter.

The Hedgehog does have clips that can be purchased separately but they are expensive and are not visually appealing.

How Long Does it Take to Install?

It will take two men a couple of hours to clear out the gutters and install the Hedgehog. The mesh may take a little longer. But most companies will charge for a half a day’s labour regardless.

With over 10yrs experience in the gutter cleaning industry we have seen how good (or bad) different types of gutter guard is and how well it works in different situations.

To be blunt, gutter guard is a total waste of time and money. Firstly, It may be relatively cheap to buy, but it can be a nightmare to install, and if you get someone else to install it for you, it will work out expensive.

Secondly, no amount of gutter protection we have seen on the market can stop all the debris that ends up in the gutter, for example, most roofs in the uk will weather with the silt (very fine grade grains, like sand) continually washing into the gutter, and you would be extremely surprised how quickly this builds up… All kinds of plants, grass and other vega station grow in silt extremely well. Gutter protection rendered useless.

Finally, when you realise that the gutter protection isn’t working quite as well as you thought, you now have to get back up the ladder, take it all down, clean the gutters, then put it all back. Dangerous and time consuming.

It is so much quicker safer and easier to just get the gutters cleaned out once per year, and you can hire in a company that can clean the gutters with a vac. It doesn’t cost the earth and they also check the gutters at the same time so you don’t ever get any surprises. Check out http://fixedpriceguttercleaning.co.uk

I never knew there were so many different options when it comes to gutter protection. That is actually a really cool and fair way that you price your gutter protection. I think that the gutter hedgehog would me the one that I would need at my house in Tonga. As for here in the states I could go with something more general.
