The prices we gathered were for the following:

  1. Pressure treated timber – this is the type often found in the budget range in most garden centres. These usually cost from £14 per square metre, supply-only.

How We Sourced Our Prices

The prices you see displayed in our tables on this page are all based on real quotes and estimates from businesses operating in the UK.

The process we use is simple; we gather these figures and then publish an average cost on our pages.

Visitors can then see what others are paying and hopefully protect themselves from being overcharged.

If you need help budgeting your finances then we believe Quotation Check is a great resource for you.

You can read more about how we gather quotes here.

While we think our service can be helpful, it’s not a substitute for a firm written quote that’s based on the specs of your garden. If you are after anything more than a ballpark figure, we suggest you gather your own quotations (we can help you with that too).

Timber Decking – Your Options

There are several different types of timber decking and they are all priced differently:

  • Budget Range – These timber products are usually made from pressure treated pine. They are affordable, popular and can be easily secured with nails and screws. The downside is that they do suffer from splits and cracks.
  • Premium Products – These timber decking products are often made from Pine and Ceder (softwoods) or tropical hardwoods such as Yellow Balau or Ipe.
  • Composites and Plastics – Composite garden decking boards are manufactured from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic. You can also purchase pure plastic decking boards.

Our Quotes – What Isn’t Excluded

The prices displayed on this page are based on quotes for the premium decking boards secured with hidden fixings/fasteners.

Our budget range timber was to be fixed with screws directly through the face of the deck.

Handrails will add extra cost to the quote, there are so many choices that it’s impractical to estimate those costs without seeing the project, so we have excluded them from our price guide.

The shape of your decking will also affect the final cost. Square and rectangular are the cheapest while any design with curves will be more expensive, this is due to the wastage and the extra time needed for the cuts

Quote 2) 15 Square Metres Budget Decking to Grass/Shrub-land Area

Our second quote is also for 15 square metres of budget range decking, but this time laid onto an existing grass/mud/shrub-land. Because the surface is soft, some extra work will first need to be carried out; levelling the ground, installing foundation posts and extra waste disposal of the excavated ground material:

What Type of Company Installs Decking?

There are three types of tradespeople that install timber garden decking:

Specialist companies complete this type of work, they install decking and nothing but decking.

Landscape gardeners also typically carry out decking installations, this type of work is bread-and-butter to many landscape gardeners.

Carpenters (chippies) may also be able to carry this work, they work with timber day-in and day-out.

The colour of your timber decking will change considerably over time, especially after the first year of exposure to UV rays, this is normal and to be expected.

The decking should be kept free of an excessive amount of leaves, so an occasional sweep up is required.

Timber decking can be pressure washed but this should be done on the lowest possible power setting.

To prevent mould, moss, algae and lichen buildup a chemical fungicide can be applied periodically, once a year is usually sufficient (try a product like this).

As always, it is best to apply this product to a small area first just to test that it doesn’t discolour the timber.

Top Ten Decking Questions (FAQs)

Q) What is the life expectancy of timber decking?

A) Most decking installations last for decades. The substructure that supports the decking is likely to fail first,. Expect at least 15 years before any significant repairs are required. We assume regular cleaning/treatment etc.

Q) Are decking boards slippery when wet? How can grip be improved?

A) I’ve personally slipped on decking boards on two occasions, once whilst setting up a ladder. Neither was a pleasant experience. The boards are only slippery if they are not maintained correctly, try cleaning the boards with a solution that will kill mould, moss and algae as it’s this that makes the surface slippery.

_

Q) Can I place a hot tub onto the timber decking?

A) A hot tub can weigh several tonnes when filled with water, standard timber decking may buckle under the stress. The deck should be reinforced if you want to place a hot tub on it.

_

Q) Should decking boards be installed flat and level?

A) If the decking boards have grooves in them, then water may collect in the gaps, algae and mould will then form. This growth makes the boards slippery and shortens their lifespan. Some types of decking board should be laid with a slight fall so rainwater doesn’t pool.

Q) I’ve seen timber decking split, is this normal?

A) During the summer the timber will dry out and shrink, this may cause splits and is normal, especially with cheaper boards secured with nails or screws through the face or side.

Q) Do I need to treat/oil/paint/seal the decking?

A) Yes, oils and treatments should be applied to colour the decking and repel rainwater.  These will need to be re-applied periodically. We suggest you speak to your installer regarding the best treatments for your specific product.

Q) Can decking be installed flush (tight) to a brick wall?

A) To prevent water from coming into contact with a brick wall above the damp proof course (dpc) a gap should be left between the boards and the wall.

Q) Do I need planning permission?

A) Because timber decking is elevated, you may require planning permission, especially if your decking overlooks a neighbouring property. In most cases, decking planning permission isn’t required.

Q) What is the key differences between softwoods and hardwoods?

A) Hardwood comes from trees that shed their leaves annually such as oak trees. Softwood comes from evergreens such as conifers. A hardwood is not always harder (more dense) than softwood. Hardwood is, however, more expensive than softwood.

Q) How Can I stop weeds and roots growing through the gaps between the decking boards?

A) A weed control fabric, also known as a membrane, should be laid between the ground and the new decking.
