How Did We Get Our Figures

You’ll be pleased to know that unlike some other websites, we didn’t just grab figures from the air.

The prices you see displayed in our tables on this page are all based on real quotes and estimates from businesses operating in the UK.

The process we use is simple; we gather these figures and display an average cost on our pages, you then can see what others are paying and hopefully save yourself from being overcharged.

If you need help budgeting your finances then we believe Quotation Check is a great resource to use.

You can read more about how we gather quotes here.

While we think our service can be helpful, it’s certainly no substitute for firm written quotes. So if you are after anything more than a ballpark figure we suggest you gather your own quotations.

The cost to have timber decking installed will obviously depend on the quality of the product you choose, here is an overview of the types of decking available:

  • Budget Range – These products are usually pressure treated pine. They are affordable, popular and can be easily fixed with nails and screws. The downside is that they can suffer from splits and cracks.
  • Premium Products – These timber decking products can be made from Pine and Ceder (softwoods) to tropical hardwoods such as Yellow Balau or Ipe. They cost more but if you have small area to cover you may be pleasantly surprised at the price.
  • Composites and Plastics – Composite decking boards are made from timber fibres and plastic. An alternative is a board made from 100% plastic.

Notable Exclusions From Our Quotes (these can really bump up the price)

Our quotes for the premium decking boards included hidden fixings/fasteners that add considerable time to the installation. Our budget range timber was to be fixed with screws directly through the face of the deck. To upgrade this to hidden fasteners will add extra cost.

Handrails will extra to the cost, there are so many choices that it’s impractical to estimate those costs here.

The shape of your decking will also affect the final cost. Square and rectangular are the cheapest while any design with curves will be more expensive. This is because there is more wastage and also more cuts to the timber, this takes more time and skill.

The colour of the timber decking may fade considerably after the first year of exposure to UV rays, this is normal and to be expected. The decking should be kept free of an excessive amount of leaves so an occasional sweep up is required.

Decking can be pressure washed but this should be done on the lowest power setting.

To prevent mould, moss, algae and lichen buildup a chemical fungicide can applied once every year (try a product like this). As always, it is best to apply this product to a small area first just to test that it doesn’t discolour the timber.

Top Ten Decking Questions (FAQs)

Q) How long will the timber decking last?

A) The decking will last for decades but the sub structure that supports the decking is likely to fail first. Expect at least 15 years before any significant repairs are required. We assume regular cleaning/treatment etc.

Q) Are decking boards slippery when wet?

A) The boards are only slippery if they are not maintained correctly, try cleaning the boards with a solution that will kill mould, moss and algae that make the boards slippery.

Q) Can I place a hot tub onto the timber decking?

A) A hot tub can weigh several tonnes, a standard timber decking may buckle under the stress. The deck should be reinforced if a hot tub is going to be installed on it.

Q) Should decking boards be installed flat?

A) No, there should be a slight fall to the decking. This is to prevent water from collecting on the boards where it can pond and shorten the life of the timber.

Q) My timber decking is splitting, is this normal?

A) During the summer the timber will dry out and shrink, this may cause splits and is normal.

Q) Do I need to treat/oil/paint/seal the decking?

A) Yes, oils and treatments can be used to colour the decking and repel water.  These will need to be re-applied periodically. Speak to you installer regarding the best treatments for your specific product.

Q) Can decking be installed flush (tight) to a brick wall?

A) To prevent water from coming into contact with a brick wall above the damp proof course (dpc) a gap should be left between the boards and the wall.

Q) Do I need planning permission?

A) Because timber decking is elevated, you may require planning permission. Especially if your decking overlooks a neighbouring property.

Q) What is the difference between softwood and hardwood?

A) Hardwood comes from trees that shed their leaves annually such as oak trees. Softwood comes from evergreens such as conifers. A hardwood is not always harder (more dense) than softwood. Hardwood is typically more expensive than softwood which is more popular.

Q) How to stop weeds growing through the gaps in decking boards?

A) A weed control fabric should be laid between the ground and the decking.
